I used 1/2 birch for my headliner shelf.1. **Cutting the Pattern:**- First, cut the pattern with scissors about an inch outside the actual line all the way around.- If your board has a factory edge, you can cut the flat, long edge of the pattern directly on the line and tape the flat edge of the pattern to it to reduce the number of cuts you need to make.- Use clear packing tape to secure the pattern to the board, taping it down completely before cutting. (I used a jigsaw.)2. **Cutting and Sanding the Board:**- After cutting, sand the edges thoroughly to ensure smoothness.- There’s an additional piece for the shelf’s edge. Cut this piece out, then install it so the edge points up toward the van ceiling, creating a lip inside the shelf to prevent items from falling out.- I glued and nailed mine in place, then sanded the bottom of the shelf and the lip to create a smooth transition between the two.3. **Finishing:**- I painted the bottom of the shelf and the lip but skipped painting inside the shelf. I lined the inside with contact paper for a finished look.4. **Installing the Brackets:**- Start by prying off the coat hooks behind the seats with a standard screwdriver. Insert the blade at the bottom of the hook and gently pry until the hook pops off.- The longer bracket will attach here. The bracket is shaped like an upside-down “L.” Attach the long part of the “L” to the van wall. Screw it into the spot where the coat hook was, allowing the short part of the “L” to be closest to the ceiling. Your headliner shelf will rest on the short part of the “L.”5. **Front Bracket Installation:**- The shorter bracket attaches near the front. Pop off the small cover over the screw that holds the sun visor mounting bracket in place. (The specific screw you’re looking for is closest to the coat hook’s mounting area.) This is a round tab that hides the screw.- Unscrew the screw, and position the short bracket behind the plastic mount so that the hole on the long side of the “L” bracket is now between the van wall and the sun visor bracket. The long side of the bracket should be alongside the van wall, and the short part should be closest to the ceiling. The headliner shelf will rest on the short part of the bracket. Screw this in, securing the bracket between the visor mount and the side wall of the van.6. **Marking and Drilling the Pilot Holes:**- After both brackets are installed, place the shelf on top of them to ensure it fits well.- Use a pen to mark the screw hole locations on the shelf by drawing circles through the holes in the brackets.- Remove the shelf and drill the pilot holes where you marked the circles.7. **Securing the Shelf:**- Place the shelf back on the brackets, aligning the pilot holes with the bracket holes.- Finally, secure the shelf by screwing through the brackets into the shelf.- Once secured, reattach the coat hook over the bracket.**Voilà!** Your headliner shelf is now installed!
